Y-CARS YOUNG CHANGE AGENTS FOR ROAD SAFETY
‘A joint effort by 3M India, United Way Bengaluru and CoRPS India to Make Teens Safe Road Users’
TURNING YOUNG TEENS INTO CHANGE - AGENTS
Y-CARS is a hands-on program for school students between 11-16 years of age which helps them develop essential skills to become safe road-users and ultimately agents of change. The program is conducted by CoRPS India in association with 3M India and United Way Bengaluru in schools across India to educate youth about road safety and the concept of the road being a shared space.
WHY Y-CARS?
Historically, our efforts towards Road Safety Education have been focused on either raising awareness about road signages and traffic rules, or on learning to drive a vehicle. This has not addressed the issue of human behavior while driving i.e. why we undermine risk on the road.
There is a need to recognize learning that directly affects one’s brain, heart and causes them to observe and register moving and non-moving hazards.
PROJECT STRUCTURE
Y-CARS entails fun and engaging 3-tier workshop delivered through the existing time-table of a school. It requires 3-4 hour engagement with students over 3-4 days. The Program successfully leads to students recognizing road as a shared social space, empathizing with other road users and developing skills to spot hazards and defend themselves against them.

Understand that Roads are a shared social space.
Observe and perceive the rights and responsibilities of different types of road users
Experience the different aspects of road and develop hazard perception.
Act on the knowledge and create Safe Zone and encourage parents to drive safer.
Y-CARS PARTNERS
3M India as a principal partner has been supporting the project which has helped us reach over 1000+ school kids across the country. They provide us with signages and takeaways which help us initiate interest and a sense of experiential learning amongst the participants of the workshop.
UWB is the delivery partner for this program. UWB has helped in reaching out to schools for implementation of this program and for creating the brigade of Young Change Agents for Road Safety.
Concern for Road and Pedestrian Safety provides the activity based curriculum and trained facilitators to run the Y-CARS program in schools. The activities are carried out by the CoRPS with an aim to leave a lasting impression on young teens and turn them into change agents.
